R. Clement Darling III
Dr. Darling attended Trinity College in Connecticut where he graduated in 1978. He received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati Medical College in 1984. He completed his residency training at Harvard/Deaconess in Boston, MA, in 1989 and his vascular surgery fellowship at Albany Medical Center in 1991.
Dr. Darling is Board Certified in both General Surgery and Vascular Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and has appointments on many national and regional vascular surgery societies and currently serves on the board of the Society for Vascular Surgery. Dr. Darling is President of The Vascular Group, PLLC, the Director for the Institute for Vascular Health and Disease, Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery at Albany Medical Center Hospital, Professor of Surgery at Albany Medical College, and Chair of the Vascular Educational Endowment Fund. He is on staff at Albany Medical Center Hospital, St. Peters Hospital and Albany Memorial Hospital in Albany as well as holding privileges at most of the area hospitals in Troy, Schenectady, Glens Falls and as far south as Kingston and Poughkeepsie. Dr. Darling, with the assistance of former EVS President, Dhiraj Shah, has established and overseen one of the largest vascular care networks in the country, encompassing over 14 hospitals and 18 vascular surgeons. This network, combined with an extensive long standing registry, allows for comprehensive analysis and follow-up as well as establishment of appropriate triage of patients and treatment protocols, a model now used by many centers.
Dr. Darling has been involved in clinical research throughout his career and has participated as principal investigator or co-investigator in more than 50 clinical research trials over the past 20 years for carotid disease, arterial disease, and open and endovascular therapies for abdominal aortic aneurysm disease.
Dr. Darling is an outstanding technical surgeon. He has been named to Strathmore’s Who’s Who and America’s Top Doctor every year since 2002 and Best Doctors of the Hudson Valley since 2006. He has participated in and chaired numerous committees for the Society for Vascular Surgery due to his superb leadership skills and clinical judgment.
Dr. Darling is a true academician. He has written over 160 manuscripts published in peer reviewed journals, authored more than 80 book chapters, and has lectured extensively around the world throughout his career. He has been named to multiple national and regional medical societies including the Society for Vascular Surgery, the Eastern Vascular Society, the New England Society for Vascular Surgery, the Peripheral Vascular Surgery Society, the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery, and the American Board of Vascular Specialists where he has held multiple leadership positions. These include President of the PVSS and EVS as well as the current treasurer for the SVS.
